Captured at sunset at Trebarwith Strand on the north Cornwall coast, this image was taken from the exposed rock formations that emerge at low tide. I used a long exposure to soften the movement of the incoming waves, creating a sense of motion while retaining detail in the dramatic foreground rocks. The composition uses the natural lines and textures of the slate formations to lead the eye towards the setting sun and Gull Rock on the horizon. Timing was everything; I waited for a break in the clouds and the perfect surge of water to add energy to the scene, while the warm glow of the sunset provided a striking contrast to the cool tones of the sea and rocks.
