London Calling: The Story Continues

Ever since I published The Galway Girl, one thing has remained true.

The story was never meant to end there.

From the very beginning, The Galway Girl was planned as the first part of a trilogy. While the first novel tells a complete story in its own right, I always knew there was more to come. The characters had further journeys ahead of them, more challenges to face, and more stories to tell.

I'm delighted to say that the second book in the series, London Calling, is now almost ready.

And this time, we're moving twenty years into the future.

Twenty Years Later

One of the things that interested me most when planning the trilogy was the idea of following characters through different stages of their lives.

The people we are at twenty are rarely the people we become at forty.

Life has a habit of reshaping us.

Dreams evolve.

Relationships change.

Unexpected opportunities appear.

Sometimes life takes us exactly where we hoped to go.

More often, it takes us somewhere we never expected.

London Calling picks up two decades after the events of The Galway Girl and explores what has happened in the years since readers last spent time with these characters.

Twenty years is a long time.

Long enough for lives to change.

Long enough for old dreams to be tested.

Long enough for choices made years earlier to still cast long shadows.

Why a Trilogy?

When I first began developing the story, it quickly became clear that a single book wouldn't be enough.

The themes I wanted to explore—love, friendship, ambition, family, identity, and the passage of time—needed room to breathe.

I wasn't just interested in a single chapter of these characters' lives.

I wanted to see how they grew.

How they changed.

How the decisions they made when they were younger influenced the people they became.

A trilogy felt like the perfect way to tell that story.

The first book introduces the characters and their world.

The second explores where life has taken them.

And the third book—yes, there will be a third book—will bring the journey to its conclusion.

The final chapter isn't written yet, but it's already taking shape in my mind.

Returning to Familiar Faces

One of the joys of writing London Calling has been spending time with characters I've lived with for several years.

Writers often talk about characters feeling real.

It's difficult to explain unless you've experienced it, but there comes a point when characters stop feeling like inventions and start feeling like people whose stories you're simply recording.

Returning to them twenty years later felt a little like meeting old friends for coffee and discovering what they've been doing all this time.

Some things have changed.

Some things haven't.

And a few surprises emerged along the way—even for me.

A Different Story for a Different Time

While The Galway Girl was very much a story about youth, possibility, and discovering your place in the world, London Calling explores a different stage of life.

This is a story about consequences.

About choices.

About looking back as well as looking forward.

It's about understanding that life rarely follows the route we originally planned.

Sometimes that's disappointing.

Sometimes it's wonderful.

Often it's both at the same time.

I think many readers will recognise aspects of their own lives in that journey.

Nearly There

After many months of writing, rewriting, editing, and occasionally staring at a screen wondering why a character refuses to behave themselves, London Calling is approaching the finish line.

The manuscript is being refined, final adjustments are being made, and publication is now firmly on the horizon.

It's an exciting stage of the process.

It's also slightly terrifying.

Writers spend months living inside a story. Eventually there comes a point where you have to let other people into that world and hope they enjoy the journey as much as you enjoyed creating it.

Looking Ahead

While my focus right now is on getting London Calling ready for publication, I know this isn't the end of the story.

Far from it.

The Galway Girl trilogy has always been a three-book journey.

Book One was The Galway Girl.

Book Two is London Calling.

And Book Three will eventually bring the story to its conclusion.

I'm not quite ready to reveal details of that final instalment yet, but I can promise that the story isn't over.

There is still one more chapter to come.
